Herberty Betterley |
Herbert Betterley joined Doulton at Burslem in 1886 at the age of 26, having studied at Burslem School of Art for many years. He was entrusted by the art director, John Slater, with the control of a select group of artists and craftsmen.
Many of the designs at the brilliantly successful Chicago Exhibition of 1893 were the work of Herbert Betterley. His designs have, as shown below, the initials HB and a code number following, on the reverse. Below is an example of Herbert Betterley's 'HB' signature mark for Doultons.
