Harriet Knight

Harriet Knight monogram

Little is known of Harriet Knight. According to the ‘bible’ on Doulton, The Doulton Lambeth Wares, by Desmond Eyles and Louise Irvine, Harriet Knight was a Junior Assistant at Doultons Lambeth in 1882.

A pair of vases designed by Eliza Simmance

The Siliconware vases shown below (designed by Eliza Simmance) have four monograms underneath; that of the designer, and three assistants, one of them Harriet Knight. Consummate skill was needed to carry out the mosaic work and the ‘cracked ice’ decoration shown, and the time needed was considerable. This is why the designers handed over the more laborious tasks to their assistants.
